The CCC and the Shawnee. Before the New Deal in the 30’s, the Shawnee was clearcut farmland for the most part.

And the farmland was poor, and farms were failing by the hundreds. The government began buying them out and building a forest out of barren land. There were several CCC camps in the Shawnee. There were over 140 in Illinois. Pomona was home to an all black CCC camp.  I’ll post a list of links for people interested in the History of the Start of what is now the Shawnee. The first one is one of the best on the History in a nutshell.
